Follow this series of blog posts to "experience" Amanda's smile transformation!

I have had the opportunity to work in Dr. Byars dental practice for the past 3 years. During that time, I have been able to see many of our patients enjoy dramatic smile transformations.

For quite a while now, I have had the desire to replace the veneers I have had for 10 years. I was always happy with my veneers, but after seeing the quality of work that Dr. Byars provided, I was motivated and ready for a change!

After consulting with Dr. Byars, he was more than happy to take on my case. However, he told me that if he was going to replace my veneers, there were a few simple steps to take to insure that this was done right! His first recommendation was a procedure called crown lengthening. This procedure is typically done by a periodontist or an oral surgeon. The idea is to reshape some of the gum tissue and to expose more of the tooth structure to create proper symmetry, making for a more attractive smile.

It was recommended to me ten years ago to have this procedure, but I was really hesitant and had many fears. I made my appointment, and went for a consultation with Dr. Douglas Walters. Dr. Walters agreed with Dr. Byars recommendation and we scheduled for the procedure.

I will admit, I was extremely nervous when it came time for my appointment. I even almost backed out! I was somewhat relieved when I arrived at my appointment and to find out that Dr. Walters actually scheduled some extra time because he knew that I was pretty anxious.

The crown lengthening procedure was actually much easier than I expected. After I was numb the procedure took less than an hour. I was even more surprised that I didn’t have much swelling or pain. Dr. Walters asked for me to check back in with him in three weeks so he could check on my healing progress.

After three weeks, Dr. Walters was pleased with the results and asked for me to wait three more weeks until the next step!

Check back again soon, as I will be blogging and posting photos about the next steps in my cosmetic smile transformation!

Protect Your Teeth for a Lifetime of Great Oral Health!

Would you like to find a way to protect your teeth from decay and sensitivity? Would you like to reduce your need for dental fillings in the future? Byars Dental is now offering fluoride application as an important service to adults as well as all of the children we see in our practice.

This important service is typically done with fluoride varnish, a clear liquid that is brushed onto the teeth after the professional cleaning appointment. This only takes 1-2 minutes and will protect your teeth from decay, allowing you to keep your permanent teeth much longer.

If any of the following conditions apply to you, fluoride varnish would be of great benefit.

-you drink bottled water
-gum recession
-sensitive teeth to hot or cold
-multiple fillings or crowns present
-taking medications that cause dry mouth
-recently completed dental work
-frequent teeth grinder
-tobacco use
-soda or sugary beverage drinker
-family history of dental decay
-currently wear braces
-use of home whitening products
-limited hand dexterity
-frequent use of hard candy or mints
-acid reflux

Give us a call today at 816-781-8222 and find out how fluoride varnish can benefit you!

National Children's Dental Health Month

Did you know that February is National Children's Dental Health Month? Good oral healthcare habits start at an early age. Teach your child the importance of regular brushing and flossing and try to reduce sugary liquids from your child's diet. When soda is consumed, be sure that your child brushes or at the very least, rinses her mouth out with water to reduce acid, the byproduct of the metabolism of sugars. Give them the benefit of healthy teeth for a lifetime!

We recently visited the Liberty, Missouri Early Childhood Center and talked about the importance of good oral hygiene to 250 kids ages 3-5. We had a great time and saw some awesome smiles!

Kids, no need to fear, we just got Santa fixed up for his run this year!

Even Santa Claus runs into the occasional snafu! Too many cookies post last Dec. 25th have lead to a nasty abscess and a non-restorable tooth #14 for ole Saint Nick. Never Fear. Byars Dental, the *official dentist of Santa Claus, (*-non official, official dentist) has come to the rescue so that your friend and mine can make it out on his route this year. Shortly after Jan. 1st, when his insurance benefit rolls over, he will return to us for an implant and crown. Have a Happy Holiday Season!
